SPECTACULAR BOARD, TRUISM, JENNY HOLZER

Jenny Holzer is one of the most famous american conceptual artist. She lives and works in New York since 1977. And it’s the same year when she starts the series Truism, works based on writing, words on paper to spread around the city. Two years later, in 1979, she joined Colab, an artist group, one of the exponents is Basquiat, they prefer urban and metropolitan places as a dissemination of their work, in contrast to the traditional structures (galleries, museums, specialized magazines).

In Holzer’s work the themes are constantly those of war, politics, violence and death. Her poetry is based on the principle of public art and she is bearer of messages spread outside of the traditional channel. Messages printed on leaflets and distributed on the street. At the end of 70s she created black and white posters abusively reported on the streets of Soho. She made T-shirts, caps, condom packages, scoreboards, scraps, tombstones, aluminum, bronze plaques, etc. In the 1980s she works on advertising boards and monumental LED, and this new mediums “has suddenly changed the emphasis of my works. It was like having the voice of authority saying something different from what it would normally say” (artist’s words).

Jenny Holzer’s installation are betweenpublic” and “private”, on the border between “accepted” and “not politically correct”. The installations are site-specific and tailor-made for the space that content it. One of the most significant version of his Truism is the Spectacular Board installation. On 1982 she made a giant LED-panel at Times Square. Strong phrases such as “Power abuse is never a surprise”, “Every surplus is immoral”, “Protect me from what I want”, are shows day and night.

In the gallery below we can see Holzer early works like Truism compared with her new works.
