BACK HOME, ADRIAN PACI, 2001

The Back Home series presents four different photographs of the members of a few families, posing in front of a reproduction of a cozy furnished house. The members of the families are all dressed up for a purpose and they seem to be prepared for an important moment.

The families are composed by immigrants, and they are depicted in front of a reproduction of their former house in Albania, their country of origin. The family portraits are a dialogue between the old life of an immigrant and their new life in a new country.

The family portrait is a topos of the art of all centuries, but usually it is an official occasion for important people. It doesn’t concern poor people, or even normal people, like immigrants could be. Adrian Paci wanted to replicate this classical portrait, but with different protagonists. Moreover, the background it’s only painted, it’s not real. The atmosphere is not sad nor happy, it has both the nostalgia and the hope every immigrant feels.

The issue of immigration is important now more than ever, due to the immigration crisis in Europe and in the US. Politicians all over the world are trying to manipulate electors to get voted through the immigration emergency, and nationalist parties are rising. Making people think about this issue is fundamental and this artist is working on these meaningful themes hoping that people catch his message: listen to him!
